ShockMyPic is an app I’ve seen a few other people use to make some cool photos, so I had to get my hands on it and see what it was all about. This app is incredibly simple and provides great painterly effects. There is also a very similar Mac version that I’ll be reviewing soon.
The user interface is very simple and easy for anyone to navigate.
Tap on the screen to bring these options up. After you load an image or use the camera, the current settings are applied. This can take a little bit of time, but its not so long that I find it annoying.
If you don’t like the look the current settings give you, you can click on the settings tab and make adjustments. Below are the only options you have to change the appearance. Tap – to make the lines smaller and + to make them larger. I’ve found smaller line settings make for the best results. If you go back and change the settings after the initial results, tap on filter again to go back to the image. Then, tap on the picture and choose refilter original image.
You’ll notice there are only 3 disappointing resolution sizes above. Hopefully they allow larger images in future updates. This is my main gripe with this app.
To really appreciate the filter, you should click the images to view the full size.

- Simple app with beautiful results.
- Reasonably priced.
- The simplicity means there is no way for a control freak to fine tune the image.
- The resolution sizes are too small. We should be able to keep our images at full resolution.
ShockMyPic is a great value at this price. Its ease of use should appeal to iphoneographers of all ages. The results tend to be painterly while still maintaining a good amount of detail. I believe its a really good to great app with room for a few improvements. If a couple of features are added, it might be worth twice as much as it is now.
Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad.Requires iOS 4.3 or later.
***Full disclosure, I did not pay for this app, I asked for a promo code so I could review it. I’m not being offered any compensation for this review. ***
