PhotoArtista oil is another excellent app from Jixipix. It does a great job of turning your photos into oil paintings. There are a number of presets in different categories ranging from realistic to abstract. The lower you scroll down in the presets, the more abstract the presets get. If you prefer more control, you can fine tune your painting with the sliders.
There are 3 different brush styles to choose from: straight, soft curve, and circular.
Brush size is self explanatory.
Bristle depth affects the texture that bristles would create.
Canvas affects how much canvas texture you want in your painting.
Stroke Variation, from what I can see, makes the image look smoother the more you increase it.
Tone is for when you want to add a tone to your painting.
Lighten seems to be similar to contrast.
Color shift will change the hue of the image.
Tap on the #3 on the bottom of the screen to put the finishing touches on your painting. There are 17 great borders to choose from. You can customize them by adding canvas texture to them or making them smooth like paper. Additionally, you can change the color of the border.
PhotoArtista Oil also offers 2 additional paint styles that you can buy in the app. PhotoArtista Haiku offers stylized watercolor and India ink looks. PhotoArtista Sketch offers hand-drawn styled drawings. Each one is available for the same price as this app. I haven’t tried them yet, but given Jixipix’s track record with Dramatic BW, Simply HDR, and PhotoArtista Oil, I have a feeling they’ll be worth purchasing.
- Beautiful results that are easy to achieve.
- Great borders.
- Images take over a minute to save.
- Presets don’t show preview of your image.
With a couple of improvements, it would be perfect. I wish the presets showed previews of my image instead of their images. That slows me down if I want to start with a preset because I have to click on a bunch to find one I like. Aside from this minor issue and the slow saving, I love PhotoArtista Oil. It does an exceptional job when it comes to turning your images into oil paintings. I’ll be keeping this one for a long time.

***Full disclosure, I did not pay for this app, I asked for a promo code so I could review it. I’m not being offered any compensation for this review. ***
